Year 10 female students have been taking part in the Girl Kind 2018 project, run by Northumbria University and Newcastle University. The project encourages girls to address issues that they experience as young females growing up in the North East.
The girls shared issues that they experience in a series of workshops which led to them creating different projects to showcase at the Day of the Girl celebration event on 6th October 2018. As part of the project, three students went to the Young Women’s Film Academy to create devise, script and record a film in one day, including doing the sound and actual filming as part of a female only crew.
During the celebration day, the girls shared their project with the audiences who attended and they also took part in zine making, circus workshops and the premier of the film made by the girls the week before, entitled ‘Whispers’. The girls met many people, including invited guest Chi Onwurah MP.
The projects the girls produced included: a scrapbook on inspirational women, a t shirt protest, designing t shirts, empowering comment cards, a photo montage of empowering images and secret letters posted around the Northumbria campus. Year 11 Girl Kind Ambassadors also filmed the day’s events, as part of a funded documentary.
The girls will also attend a special screening of ‘The Breadwinner’ at The Tyneside Cinema on 10th October 2018, the UN Day of the Girl.
