Exclusive Industry Partnerships: Nissan & Gentoo
We are proud to offer a truly exceptional opportunity for a select group of pupils through two groundbreaking partnerships with Nissan and Gentoo; two of the region’s most respected and influential employers.
Launched in 2023, these programmes represent an innovative approach to secondary education, designed to bridge the gap between the classroom and the world of work. Working closely with Sunderland College, these partnerships allow pupils to gain hands-on experience, develop industry-specific skills, preparing them for future careers in engineering and construction.
Nissan Skills Academy
Pupils accepted onto the Nissan programme study a specialised Level 2 Engineering qualification (GCSE equivalent) alongside their core GCSEs. Supported by St Wilfrid’s, Sunderland College, and a team of experts from Nissan, pupils spend two days each week at college learning practical engineering skills, and three days at school focusing on their GCSE subjects.
Regular visits to Nissan’s cutting-edge facilities provide pupils with authentic workplace experience, access to industry mentors, and the chance to use state-of-the-art equipment; all designed to prepare them for a future in advanced manufacturing and engineering.
Gentoo Trades Academy
Through our partnership with Gentoo, pupils can pursue a specialised construction qualification alongside their GCSEs. This pathway offers hands-on training in key trades, delivered by Sunderland College and supported by Gentoo’s expert team, giving pupils a strong foundation for careers in the construction and housing sectors
Guaranteed Progression Opportunities
On successful completion of either programme, pupils are guaranteed:
- An apprenticeship interview with Nissan or Gentoo
- An unconditional offer to continue their education at Sunderland College
These pathways are highly competitive and offer a unique chance to work directly with industry leaders while still at school.
